New article - Jakob Nielsen’s latest ramblings

Jakob Nielsen
I was reading Jakob Nielsen’s latest Alertbox - Avoid Within-Page Links and just had to comment. It was going to be a simple post but whilst writing I decided it would become an article in my Writings section. I have been wanting to write about JN for a while but his recent alertbox articles have been pretty reasonable albeit still condescending. So, enjoy my latest rant article, Jakob Nielsen’s latest ramblings.

I think you know my feelings on much of what the self-styled “usability guru” says. Sometimes he gives reasonable advice (though as you say; mostly in a condescending manner). Mostly I ignore his alert box now, but I read that particular “Alert” and it merely made me raise my eyebrows. I immediately thought of examples where, providing it’s pretty clear what’s going on, within-page links were pretty handy-ho.

But then, that’s Mr Nielsen for ya; prone to exaggerate over the less consequential points of design, and failing to ‘get with’ the times.

Ever wondered why the man hasn’t branched into discussing web-based clients for office/other applications, or GUI design, like the rest of us Usability Specialists??!! Why bother when he can bleed ignorant companies dry by sticking to less challenging usability issues for the rest of his life!
